What is an Auto Transport Truck?

Have you ever seen one of those large trucks on the highway with multiple smaller cars stacked up on it? That type of truck is called an auto transport truck. They are used to bring vehicles to dealerships and lots for sale or to haul unusable vehicles to junkyards or mechanics in large quantities.

Auto transport trucks are different from tow trucks in that the vehicles that they transport do not touch the road at all. Under this definition, an auto transport truck can be small enough to only carry one vehicle if it pulls the entire vehicle onto its flatbed.

Dangers of Auto Transport Trucks

All commercial trucks are dangerous when the people who drive them behave negligently. However, specific types of trucks can have specific dangers or hazards based on their design, including auto transport trucks.

Four dangers caused by the design of an auto transport truck include:

  • Blind spots: Auto transport trucks can have massive blind spots, much larger than the blind spots on even other commercial trucks. This is especially true for auto transport trucks with two or more decks. Truck drivers must be extremely cautious when changing lanes, merging, or turning because smaller vehicles can get caught in these large blind spots for minutes at a time.
  • Heavy weight: The overall tonnage of an auto transport truck is usually significant. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) does not allow any commercial truck to weigh more than 80,000 pounds when fully loaded. To save money on multiple trips, most auto transport trucks are loaded as close to this maximum as possible. In a collision, the significant weight can cause severe damage to passenger vehicles.
  • Tipping dangers: Unlike most commercial trucks that can intentionally put the heaviest product or cargo on the bottom of their trailers, auto transport trucks do not have as much room to rearrange what they haul. As a result, the average auto transport truck can be dangerously top-heavy, which makes it more likely to tip while turning sharply or braking suddenly.
  • Falling cars: Perhaps the most unique risk of auto transport trucks is the risk of falling cars. If a vehicle is not secured properly on the auto transport truck, it can fall right off and smash other vehicles in adjacent lanes.
