March is Brain Injury Awareness Month

March is Brain Injury Awareness Month. As personal injury attorneys, we are no stranger to traumatic brain injury (TBI) cases, we know first-hand just how important it is to bring awareness to these injuries as well as prevented methods we can all apply to our everyday lives.

According to the Brain Injury Association of America, there are more than 5.3 million adults and children in the United States who are living with a permanent brain-injury-related disability. This equates to one in every sixty people. Brain injuries can happen as a result of motor vehicle accidents, slips and falls, assaults, sports injuries, and combat injuries.

We thought it would be helpful to share ways to prevent brain injuries:

  • Always Drive Safe – Buckle up every time you are in a vehicle and never drive while under the influence of drugs and alcohol.
  • Always Wear Protective Headgear – Whether you are on a motorcycle, bicycle, ATV, scooter, or snowmobile, always wear protective headgear. The same goes for contact sports as well as baseball, softball, roller skating, and skateboarding. Teach kids to always reach for their helmets at a young age so they can continue to be safe throughout their life.
  • Prevent Falls – This is especially important for our elders. Speak to your doctor (or your elder’s doctor) about ways to reduce your risk of falling. This could include a review of prescriptions that may make you dizzy or drowsy and checking your eyes regularly to ensure proper vision.

If you do ever find yourself in a situation where you have been in an accident, have been struck or have fallen, always seek medical attention. Oftentimes people have suffered a brain injury and do not know it. Headache, cognitive impairment, confusion, emotional volatility, loss of consciousness, and sleep disturbance, among others, may occur to variable extents after a brain injury. These injuries can have a wide array of physical and neuropsychological effects, so it is important to act quickly. The sooner you seek proper attention, the sooner you can diagnose your injury and begin treatment.

The damages that can result from a traumatic brain injury can be both physically and emotionally daunting. If you have suffered a brain injury due to an accident, we recommend seeking legal counsel immediately.
