Has your child been exposed to Chlorpyrifos, the active ingredient used in the insecticide Lorsban? If so, there are some important details you should know.

What is Lorsban?

Lorsban is the market name for Chlorpyrifos, an organophosphate insecticide patented in 1966 by Dow Chemical Company that is typically applied to crops and buildings. It quickly kills invasive insects by attacking the nervous system and penetrating the surrounding soil, providing long-term protection from common pests. According to the EPA, more than 1 million pounds of Chlorpyrifos is sprayed on crops in the United States every year.

Families living in agricultural communities are at risk to Lorsban exposure, even if they personally do not work in the fields. Frequent crop blow-over has exposed children in neighboring communities resulting in extreme immediate reactions and less detectable cognitive conditions. Exposure can happen through physical contact, ingestion or inhalation.

What are the Side Effects?

While Chlorpyrifos itself is not toxic, the way that the body breaks it down creates a toxic reaction in the body. Adults may experience adverse short-term side effects following exposure, but children tend to be heavily affected long-term due to their inability to break down the ingredient after exposure.

The EPA found that exposure to Chlorpyrifos led to debilitating neurological damage and cognitive impairment for children up to 5 years old. In fact, exposure among pregnant women may be a direct cause of their children’s neurological damage diagnoses.

Immediate symptoms of Lorsban exposure can include:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Abdominal cramping
  • Muscle weakness or twitching
  • Coughing
  • Wheezing

Long term side effects in children can include:

  • Developmental delays
  • Adverse effect on brain development
  • Reduced birth size
  • Endocrine disruption
  • Lung and prostate cancer
