Xarelto® (rivaroxaban) is an anticoagulant or blood thinner medication used as a treatment for reducing the risk of stroke and blood clots, particularly among patients with atrial fibrillation or following hip or knee replacement surgery. Marketed by Bayer Healthcare and developed by Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Xarelto was approved by The Food & Drug Administration (FDA) in 2011 to treat patients who have pulmonary embolism, deep vein thrombosis, atrial fibrillation not caused by heart valve problems.
While Xarelto has become a top-selling medication in recent years, there have been a number of adverse reports associated with the drug, the most concerning of which involves severe and uncontrollable gastrointestinal bleeding (also known as GI bleeds) or death.
LATEST IN XARELTO LITIGATION
In June 2016, the Institute of Safe Medication Practices reported that Xarelto was linked to more serious injuries than any other drug monitored. It accounted for more than 10,000 fatal, disabling and serious injuries. Thousands of claims have been filed against Janssen Pharmaceutical and Bayer Healthcare by people who have suffered severe bleeding as a result of taking the anticoagulant medication. Attorneys argue that is doctors and patients had known the risks, the patient would have perscribed warfarin, a different anticoagulant, where internal bleeding can be treated with high dosages of Vitamin K. As of February 2017, there were more than 15,000 Xarelto lawsuits consolidated before U.S. District Judge Eldon Fallon in the Eastern District of Louisiana, and another 1,000 consolidated in the state courts of Philadelphia.
